A 5 Marla house of about 1,950 sq ft covered area needs about 37,000 to 43,000 first-class bricks for its grey structure, from Avenir’s Q4 2026 cost model for Lahore and Islamabad.

Price the whole grey structureHow the brick quantity is calculated
The calculator works out the face of the wall, takes off doors and windows, and divides by the face that one brick covers with its mortar joint.
- 1
Measure the wall
Wall area is length times height.
- 2
Take off openings
Subtract the area of doors and windows to get the net wall area.
- 3
One brick and its joint
With 10 mm joints, a 9 x 3 inch face covers about 31.9 sq in of wall.
- 4
Count bricks across
1 for a 4.5-inch wall, 2 for 9 inches, 3 for 13.5 inches.
- 5
Add wastage, round up
Add your wastage. Bricks to order are rounded up.
Worked example
A wall 10 ft long and 10 ft high, 9 inches thick, with no doors or windows.
- Net wall area100 sq ft
- ×Bricks per sq ft, 9-inch wall9.03
- =Bricks before wastage903
- +Wastage5%
- =Bricks to order, rounded up950
Mortar at 1:6: about 3 bags of cement and 17 cft of sand.
Dry mortar is taken as 1.33 times the wet volume, and a 50 kg cement bag as 1.25 cft.
Why bond pattern does not change the count
A wall of a given thickness holds the same volume of brick in any bond. Bond decides how the bricks are tied together and how the face looks, so the count moves by no more than a few percent, which wastage covers.
Stretcher bond
Every brick shows its long face, each course offset by half a brick.
For 4.5-inch walls (AJK specification, clause 11.7.4.3).
English bond
Courses of stretchers and courses of headers take turns, tying the two leaves together.
The default for 9-inch and thicker walls (clause 11.7.4.2).
Flemish bond
Headers and stretchers alternate within every course, giving a patterned face.
An alternative for 9-inch and thicker walls.
Same number of bricks in every bond. Choose the bond your drawing specifies; the quantity stays the same.
Whole house
The whole-house figures use Avenir’s grey structure quantities: 19 to 22 first-class bricks per square foot of covered area, with cement, steel, sand and crush on the same basis. They match the Grey Structure cost calculator and assume a conventional RCC frame with brick masonry, ground and first floor with a mumty, at typical design.
Not included
Brick price, RCC lintels and sun shades, plaster, damp-proof course, foundations unless you enter them as a wall, and mortar wastage.

Frequently asked questions
Answers use the same figures as the calculator above.
What is the standard brick size in Pakistan?
The standard size is 9 x 4.5 x 3 inches, about 229 x 114 x 76 mm. Sizes vary from kiln to kiln, so measure a few of the bricks you are buying and enter that size under More options.
How many bricks are needed for a 5 Marla house?
About 37,000 to 43,000 first-class bricks for the grey structure of a 5 Marla house with about 1,950 sq ft of covered area, from Avenir's Q4 2026 cost model. A 10 Marla house of about 3,200 sq ft needs about 61,000 to 70,500, and a 1 Kanal house of about 5,900 sq ft about 112,000 to 130,000.
How many bricks are in 1 square foot of a 9-inch wall?
About 9 bricks per square foot of wall, before wastage, with 9 x 4.5 x 3 inch bricks and 10 mm joints. A 4.5-inch wall takes about 4.5 and a 13.5-inch wall about 13.6.
How accurate is this brick calculator?
For the brick size you enter, the count follows the geometry of the wall. What moves the answer most is the real size of your bricks, the area of doors and windows, and the wastage you allow. It is a planning estimate, not a quotation.
Does this calculator estimate mortar quantity?
Yes. It gives cement bags and sand for the mortar. A wall 10 ft long and 10 ft high, 9 inches thick, at 1:6 needs about 3 bags of cement and 17 cft of sand.
